PAMUKKALE (HIERAPOLIS) TOUR (tour #18)
Denizli, Turkey
Pamukkale (The Cotton Castle), a very popular settlement, has the hot springs that were believed to have healing powers. The city became the center of a pagan cult in antique times but it is a spa resort today. The terraces are formed by running warm spring water, at a temperature of 35 °C / 102 °F containing calcium bicarbonate. When the water loses its carbon dioxide it leaves limestone deposits and these fascinating natural shapes are formed and Pamukkale takes its name from these formations.
This area, Hierapolis the ancient city, has always known as a healing center with its holy water. Also, there is another place called Karahayit village that has another thermal spring, Kirmizi Su (the Red Water) with its warmer water.
